So I just completed my first Del Close Marathon . What is the Del Close Marathon you ask? Well, long story short, a bunch of hilarious( and not so hilarious) improvisers come together for a weekend and do improv in honor of the great Del Close( a guy credited with bringing his Chicago Style improv to New York).
Anywho, I had the distinct privilege of performing at 5:00am on Saturday, and 7:00am on Sunday. I know, dynamite time slots. I mean, who wouldn't want to come to a show at 5:00 and 7:00 in the morning?
They were very intresting shows, good, but interesting. I don't think it really mattered what was done on stage. And by mattered, I mean the majority, if not all, of the audience was there in body, not so much mind, and feeling pretty good about life. I mean, there were four completely nude individuals in the audience for heaven's sake. It's 7:00 in the morning…why not be nude?
In my last show with Chantico Warfare , we brought coffee and donuts for the audience. They were ecstatic. At one point, the entire crowd was chanting, "USA,USA,USA," for no particular reason. Honestly, does it get better than that? I mean, why wouldn't you chant USA at 7:00 in the morning? You'd be a fool not to.
After everyone was done chanting, and getting coffee, yes nude men included, we did our performance. The performance went well…not our best, but well.
After the show, we all left to go eat breakfast, and talk about the show. A guy staggering down the stairs, stopped us as we were leaving. "Hell of a show," he said. "Oh really, you liked it," Chantico member said. "Yeah man, box of joe!" he replied.
So there you have it, a successful marathon. Not much sleep, but successful none the less. And we all learned a valuable lesson. If you ever want people to really remember your performance, just bring a smile, chant, and a box of joe.
